Columbia Gas sponsors statewide egg hunt to promote natural gas safety

Columbia Gas of Ohio announced a statewide egg hunt to promote natural gas safety. The Columbus egg hunt will take place on Wednesday April 12th from noon to 2 p.m. at the Columbus Commons.

Columbia Gas said participants will have the chance to sniff out hidden eggs for a chance to win $100 gift card.

The gas company said while natural gas is colorless and odorless, a rotten egg like odor, mercaptan, is added to make a detection easier.

“We’re launching the egg hunt as a fun way to educate the public on how to identify natural gas and stay safe, while also making it easier for them to retain the message should they ever need to act in an emergency,” said Columbia Gas of Ohio Communications Manager Dave Rau. “It’s important for Ohioans to know that if they do smell natural gas, they should leave the area immediately and go to a safe place to call 911 and then Columbia Gas at 1-800-344-4077. Then wait for a service crew to arrive.
